
AI may be able to generate letterforms in a matter of seconds. But can it create a typeface that truly has character?
A few years ago, a question like this might have sounded like a futuristic experiment. Today, generative technology is already capable of producing almost anything related to visual design. We can ask AI to create illustrations, visual identities, posters, and even explore different lettering styles using nothing more than a few sentences.
And as this technology begins to enter the world of typography, a much more interesting question emerges.
If AI can generate letters that look good, does that mean AI can also design a typeface?
The answer may be yes, but the issue is not as simple as generating letterforms.
Because type design does not stop at how a letter looks.
A typeface has a system. It has rhythm, proportions, relationships between characters, spacing, kerning, and visual decisions that make an entire alphabet feel as though it belongs to the same world.
And this is where the word “character” becomes interesting.
Imagine looking at two fonts without knowing who designed them. The first font looks extremely polished. Every letter has a consistent structure, the spacing is perfect, and technically, nothing feels wrong.
The second font may have a few imperfections. Some shapes are slightly unusual, the proportions are more eccentric, or there are small details you would not normally find in a generic typeface.
Yet strangely enough, you might remember the second font more easily.
Why?
Because character does not always come from perfection. In many cases, character comes from intentional design decisions. A type designer does not simply ask, “How do I design the letter A?”
They also consider how that A will relate to B, C, D, and every other character in the system. They think about how the font feels when used in a word, a sentence, a logo, or an entire page. A single character never truly exists on its own. And the further we look at type design as a system, the clearer it becomes why the question of AI is so interesting.
AI is extremely good at recognizing patterns. It can learn visual relationships from enormous amounts of data and then generate something based on those patterns. This is one reason AI can produce different visual styles so quickly. But type design has a slightly different relationship with patterns. A designer does not simply recognize that a particular serif looks elegant. They also need to determine why that serif feels elegant and how that quality should be maintained throughout the entire type system.
The same applies to a handwritten typeface. Natural-looking handwriting is not simply a collection of irregularly drawn letters. There is a certain rhythm. There is visual pressure. There are relationships between characters. There are decisions about how different one character can be before the overall lettering loses its consistency. AI can learn these patterns. But does learning a pattern mean understanding the reason behind it?
This is where the distinction becomes much harder to measure. There is one thing I think is often overlooked when discussing AI and type design. We focus too much on the final result. If AI generates an alphabet that looks interesting, we may immediately call it a typeface. But a type designer usually works through a much longer process than simply generating character shapes.
They sketch.
Test proportions.
Modify shapes.
Compare characters.
Adjust spacing.
Refine kerning.
Test small and large sizes.
Test word combinations.
Then repeat it again.
And again.
That process is not simply a way to achieve a visual result. It is also how a designer discovers the identity of a typeface. In many cases, the character of a font is discovered throughout the process rather than being fully defined from the beginning. This is why I remain somewhat skeptical when I see claims that AI can “create a unique font” simply because the result looks different.

Being different does not always mean having character.
A font can look experimental and still feel generic. A font can have unusual shapes without having a coherent system. Conversely, a very simple typeface can have a strong character because every visual decision feels consistent. Character is not simply something you see. Character is something you feel consistently when the entire system is being used.
So, does that mean AI is completely incapable of creating a typeface with character?
I think it is too early to say so. AI actually has enormous potential as an exploration tool. Imagine a type designer looking for a new visual direction. Instead of starting with a single possibility, AI could help generate dozens of initial approaches. Some may be useless. Some may feel too generic. But perhaps one or two ideas could open up a new direction that had never been considered before.
In that context, AI is not a replacement for the type designer. It is more like an exploration engine. The designer remains the person who decides what is worth developing, what should be discarded, and how an idea can evolve into a typeface system that is genuinely usable. And to me, this approach is far more interesting than simply asking whether AI can replace type designers.
Because there is a major difference between generating letters and designing a typeface. Generating letters means creating shapes. Designing a typeface means creating relationships. Relationships between uppercase and lowercase, relationships between wide and narrow characters, relationships between letters and numbers, and relationships between shapes and negative space. Even the relationship between a font and the context in which it is used matters. A typeface designed for editorial work does not need to speak the same visual language as one created for food packaging. A font for a movie poster may require a far more expressive character than one used in an application interface.
That is why the character of a typeface cannot be separated from its purpose. A font is not simply a collection of shapes. It is a visual language. And perhaps this is where AI faces its greatest challenge. AI can help answer the question “What should it look like?” But a designer still needs to answer a much more important question:
“Why should it look like that?”
Why is the serif that tall?
Why is the terminal cut that way?
Why is a particular letter made narrower?
Why is the spacing so loose?
Why does one character have a different shape from another?
The answers to these questions create the system. And that system is what makes a typeface feel as though it has an identity.
Interestingly, imperfections can also become part of a typeface’s character. A vintage font may have uneven texture. A handwritten typeface may have a slightly inconsistent baseline. A display font may intentionally use unconventional proportions. All of these things can look like “mistakes” when viewed purely from a technical perspective. But when done intentionally, those imperfections become part of the visual language.
AI may be able to imitate these characteristics. But the question then changes:
Does it understand why those imperfections are necessary?
Or does it simply know that certain patterns tend to appear alongside words such as “vintage,” “handmade,” or “organic”?
The difference may seem subtle. But for a type designer, that difference is enormous.
I also do not think humans will always create better typefaces than AI. That is not the point.
A human can create a bad font too. A typeface can have poor spacing, an inconsistent character system, or design decisions that fail when used at scale. AI may be able to produce something technically much faster. But production speed does not automatically result in better design reasoning.
And I think this is the area that remains particularly interesting to observe. Not whether AI can draw letters, but whether AI can make typographic decisions that feel intentional.
Ultimately, we may see more typefaces created through collaboration between humans and AI. AI generates possibilities. The designer chooses a direction. AI helps explore variations. The designer builds the system. AI accelerates repetitive tasks. The designer determines the character.

In this scenario, technology does not eliminate the role of the type designer. Instead, the designer’s role may shift from someone who simply creates shapes to someone who increasingly curates, directs, tests, and determines visual decisions.
That is not a small change. It could fundamentally change how typefaces are created in the future.
There is one thing that I believe remains difficult for technology to replace: the human context behind a typeface.
A font might be inspired by old signage discovered in a particular city. It might originate from someone’s handwriting. It might come from an interest in 1970s posters. It might have been created to solve a specific branding problem. It might even have started with a small mistake while drawing a single character.
Stories like these are not always visible when we type using a font. But they are often part of the reason a typeface feels different.
And perhaps that is what we mean when we say a font has character.
Not simply because its shapes are unique.
But because there is intention, context, and decision-making behind them.
So, can AI design a typeface that has character? Maybe.
But I think the more interesting question is:
Can AI determine what character a typeface should have, why that character matters, and how to maintain it consistently throughout the entire system?
For now, the answer remains an open field of experimentation. And precisely because there is no definitive answer yet, this development makes typography so fascinating.
AI may make the process of creating fonts much faster. It may help type designers explore more ideas. It may even produce letterforms we have never imagined before.
But as long as type design still requires decisions, rather than simply generation, the human role will remain extremely important.
Because a good font is not simply a font that looks different.
A good font is a font that has something to say.
Ultimately, the best way to understand the character of a typeface is not simply by looking at its name or reading its description. Try typing with it, changing its size, pairing it with another font, and seeing how its shapes perform in different contexts.
